Seriously The New Yorker, WTF???
================================

We should nuke the punditry from orbit. It's the only way to
  be sure...

What?

In what is a very terrible bit of "satire," the cover of the new
The New Yorker features Barack and Michelle Obama dressed up like
terrorists. Personally I found it to be very offensive. If you
want to satirize the lies and smears being propagated about the
Obamas, then perhaps you shouldn't legitimize them by enshrining
them on the cover of your magazine. Maybe a better way to
satirize them would be to attack the people spreading them. But I
suppose that would require a level of intelligence and
sophistication we can't expect from The New Yorker.

Polling

Rasmussen has several state polls out today, in South Dakota,
Iowa, Michigan, and Minnesota. The latter three polls all show
Obama with solid leads between 8 in Michigan and 17 in Minnesota.
These states are traditionally swing states, but they look like
they'll be solidly blue in this election. The real swing states
are starting to look like they may include the Dakotas, as the
South Dakota poll puts Obama just 4 points behind McCain. If the
swing states in this election are states like Virginia, Montana,
and the Dakotas rather than those like Minnesota, Wisconsin, and
Iowa, it's very difficult to see McCain getting to 270.

Obama on Iraq and the Dow Drops
===============================

  Meanwhile, Bush fiddles...

Iraq

Today Obama gave a major speech on his Iraq policy and overall
strategy for dealing with the middle east and restoring America's
prestige. Highlights include a reaffirmation of his commitment to
getting our troops out of Iraq within 16 months of entering
office, increasing our presence in Afghanistan, securing nuclear
materials, and massive spending on alternative energy sources.

Medicare

The one bit of good news out of the Senate last week was when
Senator Kennedy showed up to deliver the crucial vote on a new
Medicare bill, putting it over the top and getting it passed.
Yesterday, Bush vetoed the bill. Today, Congress overrode him.
Hopefully they won't return to this issue in 4 months and repeal
it, eliminating all progress.

The Economy

Today the Dow closed below 11,000 for the first time in 2 years.
The Dow is also now in the same territory as it was when Bush
first entered office. So on his watch, the markets have
essentially made no forward progress while the dollar has tanked
and the price of oil has increased fivefold. But it's ok, because
Bush is an optimist.
