Not only does this amendment deny same-sex couples the right to be married in the state of Kansas, it also forbids any relationship between two people from sustaining any of the same rights and privileges associated with marriage.
In other words, not only can same-sex couples not get married, they can't go through other legal means to obtain the same protections for themselves. This could mean no power of attorney, no hospital visitation, no employee health benefits, and so-on. The only explanation for this patently discriminatory attack on gay families is a deep-seated hatred of gays in the state of Kansas.
As far as I'm concerned, this is strike three for Kansas. Strike one was GodHatesFags.com, based in Topeka. Strike two was their treatment of Matthew Limon, a young man who made a mistake that would have gotten him just over a year in prison had he been heterosexual, yet even the state Supreme Court thinks it's justified to give him 17 years simply because he's not.
Kansas has decided that it's cute and amusing to attack gay people and their families. As long as they maintain this attitude, I'm boycotting Kansas. I invite you to join me. It's easy:
It's not like Kansas is such a great tourist destination anyway. This one is especially difficult for some of us (including me) who have family in Kansas. So don't just refuse to travel to this land of hatred; tell the people you would have visited why you refuse to go there. The state has expressed a deep hatred of you or your loved ones, so you feel unwelcome.
Don't do business with the following Fortune 1000 companies that are based in Kansas:
Naturally there are a lot of Kansas-based businesses which are not Fortune-1000 companies. You can search Kansas corporations online, but note that just because a business is operating in Kansas, that doesn't necessarily mean that business is based there. You may have to do a little research. When buying products online, checking their domain name with whois may provide the address of their corporate headquarters.
When choosing not to purchase goods or services from these businesses, make sure you tell them why: you don't want your money going to Kansas, because Kansas has made it clear that they hate you or your loved ones.
Boycotts generally don't have a direct impact. In modern times, nobody expects any boycott to directly put an entity out of business or even to cause financial hardship. What boycotts can do, however, is draw attention and bad press to an entity's misbehaviour. The effect is indirect, but can be just as effective.
Be sure to tell others what you're doing and why, and share your experiences with us as well.
