I hate to be cynical (well, no I don't) but one really has to question why the FBI would release information sending the whole country into a frenzy/manhunt based on unreliable evidence that would later turn out to be entirely contrived.

Less than a week after the FBI announced it was looking for five men who may have entered the country illegally, reports began to surface doubting that the threat was real. In fact, it was not. Kinda makes you wonder about these sightings of the 5, doesn't it?

According to the Globe and Mail, one RCMP officer expressed frustration with the whole affair and noted, "It was a slow week at the White House. They needed something to stir the pot because nothing was happening in Iraq." I'm inclined to take the cynical path and agree with him- the administration needs to keep people scared in order to keep them from questioning its policies.

According to UPI, the madness resulted from a tip from Michael John Hamdani, who is being held on charges of falsifying documents, including passports. Officials say he fabricated the "tip" in an effort to get himself off the hook. I have to wonder why it is that they only figured that out a week after sending the nation into a panic.
