Sunday my favorite science fiction series turns 40, having lasted longer than any other, including Star Trek. Doctor Who has had a profound impact on my life since I was a wee lad. I find the idea of a rebellious adult who often acts childish traveling space and time helping the little guy and righting wrongs quite appealing, as I'm sure our regular readers have noticed. Okay, except for the traveling in space and time part since we humans haven't really mastered that yet.Yes I'm obsessed with Doctor Who. You must learn to live with this.
On November 23, 1963, just a short time after president Kennedy was killed, Doctor Who was born. For this impressive anniversary milestone, I recommend that rabid fans such as myself sit down in front of the TV and VCR and watch the following stories while thinking back about what a great series this was, how great it is now and what it will become.
Now mind you, if you watch all of that stuff, you'll be in front of your TV for something like 13 and a half hours, so I suggest picking two or three of your favorites, grabbing a bag of jelly babies, and celebrating 40 years of fantastic science fiction.

Since I can't afford to spend 13.5 hours in front of the TV, I'll be watching The Daleks, Deadly Assassin, and Curse of Fenric.

I liked the Genesis of the Daleks, The Brain of Morbius, Enlightenment, The Five Doctors, Trial of a Time Lord, and the Sea Devils.
Unfortunately have not seen nearly enough of William Harnell and Patrick Troughton :(
The most devious, underhanded, slezy, philadering slave in all of Rome.
Ahhh, Pseudilous - Jon Pertwee, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (playing The Doctor having a vacation in ancient Rome, I swear)

I've had many friends who love the series. Try as I might, I've never been able to appreciate it. Happy Aniversary for you though.

I would also list among my favorites The Pyramids of Mars (classic early Tom Baker) and The Pirate Planet (as I'm also a huge Douglas Adams fan).
>lucretio: Pirate Planet was part of the Key to Time series, wasn't it?
>lucretio: Just looked it up, and yes it was.

Tomb of the Cybermen--this is one AWESOME DVD. I hope they rediscover MORE Patrick Troughton episodes--he's quickly becoming my favourite Doctor, along with his companions Jamie and Zoe. The War Games was the epic finish of the 2nd Doctor's career where we first get a glimpse of Gallifrey.
The Doctor of the 70's (Baker, Pertwee) was kind of like the X-Files of it's day...it was enough to get the attention of "morality crusader" Mary Whitehouse, even.
I don't know if you've seen the new FLASH-based serial starring the "new" Doctor, but I like him already...grumpy in a very transilvanian sort of way. :)
>spatula: Troughton is hands-down my favorite. You can at least -hear- his missing...
>lucretio: McCoy was my favorite. Colin Baker was my least favorite; he seemed like too...
>jnelso99: I thought the McCoy episodes a) were the most confusing stories around, and b)...
>Chickenhead: Well I've only seen a couple of McCoy episodes, but I enjoyed him...I wouldn't...
>Kitten With A Chainsaw: McCoy was my favourite too. I think that's because he's the first one I ever...
>Chickenhead: I like the story so far. I like the new Doctor even more (well, his voice and...

I supposed I could call myself a lapsed fan. In high school I went through the Doctor Who collection in the library several times, and pre-high school I used to watch every episode on TV (and ABC have just started screening DW again, right from the very very beginning).
Perhaps it's time to start reliving those innocent days via DVD again...
Happy Anniversary!
